The Post-Study Worker Visa, popularly known as the Graduate Visa, is a new scheme introduced in 2021 that allows international students to apply for work in the UK after completing their studies. Eligibility criteria for the Graduate Visa UK
To be eligible for the Graduate Visa, you must meet the following requirements:
- Currently in the UK on a Student Visa or Tier 4 (General) Visa.
- Completed a Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree, PhD or any other eligible course in the UK.
- Studied in the UK for a minimum period with your visa.
- Currently, in the UK, when you apply for the Graduate Visa.
Validity of the Graduate Visa
If you hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, the Graduate Visa is valid for 2 years. However, if you have completed your PhD, you can stay for up to 3 years from the day the application is approved.
When to apply for the Graduate Visa?
You should apply for the Graduate Visa before your current student visa or Tier 4 (General) visa expires. You can apply as soon as your university notifies the Home Office about completing your course – you do not have to wait until you have graduated or received a certificate.
How long does it take to make a decision?
The Home Office usually decides on your visa application within 8 weeks of submitting it, along with all the necessary supporting documents.
Can you stay in the UK while waiting for a decision?
Yes, you can stay in the UK once your student visa or Tier 4 visa expires while waiting for a decision on the Graduate Visa.
Application fees for the Graduate Visa
- Application fee: £715.
- Healthcare surcharge: £624 for each year you are in the UK.
Can you extend your Graduate Visa?
No, you cannot extend your stay in the UK under this route. However, you can switch to other routes like the Skilled Worker Visa.
Can your dependants apply?
If your dependents are already in the UK on a student-dependant visa, they can apply as dependents under this route. However, new dependents will not be allowed to join you.
Documents required for the Graduate Visa application
You will need the following documents to apply for the Graduate Visa:
- A valid passport or other travel documents to prove your identity and nationality.
- Biometric Residence Permit (BRP).
- A Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) reference number from when you applied for your student visa.
